Miscellany [manuscript], ca. 1570.

Most of this volume may have been compiled by a clergyman of Somerset -- there are several documents relating to ecclesiastical matters and most of the abbreviated copies of different types of deeds and legal documents relate to that county and the bishopric of Bath and Wells. In addition there are other useful pieces of information: many medicinal recipes in which the writer often describes the herbs he recommends and in what kind of place they are to be found, [from the Agnus costus herbal], an alphabetical list of herbs (p. 69); Galyon the leach's advice on diet and blood letting (p. 57); the science of blowing and hunting of the horn (p. 137); Ptolemy's horoscopes which bear a sketchy resemblance to that part of his Quadripartitum (STC 20480) on the fortunes and destinies of men and women (p. 105); physiognomical characteristics (p. 201); and several poems, two giving advice on the acquisition of land (p. 17) and on favorable and unfavorable days (p. 143, incomplete), and two on biblical themes, Joseph and his brethren (p. 1, incomplete) and Susannah and the Elders (p. 129).
